Sandy Rustin

Writing Comedy for the Stage

Perfect for students, playwrights, sketch writers, storytellers, improvisers, and curious newbies, this masterclass digs into the nitty-gritty of crafting comedy for the stage. No previous writing experience required!

Students will explore “what’s funny” (and how to make it funnier!), in the process of developing their own, unique comedic voices. Along the way, Sandy leads the class in a series of exercises designed to help students develop comedic characters & dialogue, understand physical space & physicality, define rhythm, style & tone, and allow a plot to reveal itself.

Each student will leave class having developed the beginnings of their own, new comedy.

What students are saying:

“I really enjoyed the class and Sandy was just lovely! My only comment is - I hope she does another!”

“I liked that Sandy had specific steps, actually guiding me towards writing a play.”

“One of the most valuable things I learned was that a play is equal parts dialogue and physicality. I'd never thought about that when I've written a play.”

Through the Playwrights' Collective at Florida Studio Theatre, Sandy developed a Masterclass in Writing Comedy for the Stage. Easily tailored to any audience (age/size), this class is available in person or via zoom.
